On the 1st of December climate change protestors gathered at 12pm near the Polish Embassy on Portland Place to march to Downing Street. Despite the rain roughly 2,000 people turned up full of enthusiasm.
The protestors wanted to be heard and so some came with drums and other musical instruments whilst the rest participated with their chants. The march ended in Downing Street where the Frack Free United Declaration was handed in. This was a petition against fracking.
At Downing Street speeches were also heard which began at 2.30pm and ended at 3.30pm. Speakers included Claire James from Campaign Against Climate Change who organised the event. The protest foreshadows two weeks of international negotiations in Poland which start on Monday to establish the rulebook for the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement is an agreement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (UNFCCC), which deals with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation.
Many protestors have been inspired by the IPCC’s latest report which states that we have 12 years to help prevent climate change. As a result of this protestors are trying to raise awareness of the importance of everyone getting involved and the need for the government to do more to combat climate change.
